Being from Northern Ireland (County Down in particular) it would be hard not to be familiar with the success story that is First Derivative. Working in the Financial Services sector, I’d seen first hand the reasons behind the success. Any First Derivative employees I worked with were brilliant professionals who were trusted by the client and delivered. When I was approached by a former colleague to join the company I was flattered and couldn’t say no.
A day in my role in Banking Ops is a Balancing Act. Balancing the client’s needs and project deliverables with the daily needs of my own team while also making time to contribute to the development of the practice and First Derivative as a whole.
Watching the grads flourish. On my first project with First Derivative, I led a group of 20 plus new recruits to the CMTP. Like me, they were just in the door and eager to impress. My day-to-day consists of a variety of tasks, mainly conducting background checks on new and exisiting employees going to client projects. Between liaising with 3rd party background check providers to running criminal checks for new hires, no two days are the same. There is a lot of attention to detail required for this role, which I thoroughly enjoy. Everyone in the team knows I like to make sure things are done a certain way! As some of the work we do is sent to client for review we must ensure that it is up to standard, as it is not only a representation of the team but of First Derivative as a whole.
Other aspects of my role consist of communicating with stakeholders and addressing queries the business might have. A lot of my day is providing feedback to the business on the progress of candidates screening. This allows them to feed this back to the client and ensure they are being kept in the loop of any updates and to keep on track with our turnaround times.
I think one of the things that people would be interested to know is that being a part of the screening team means keeping up to date with constant changes in laws, regulations and best practices to any pre-employment screening to ensure complete compliance. This not only goes for the UK & Ireland but for any country we have employees/clients in.
The thing that sets First Derivative apart from its competitors is the people. It's great being part of a company where you are supported both inside and outside of your team. Having a strong leadership team that values and prioritises their employees wellbeing and career progression is extremely inspiring.

I think the most rewarding part of my role is understanding that running background checks and screening candidates ensures a safe and secure work environment, not only for my colleagues but for the company as a whole. Meticulously researching and verifying candidates' backgrounds plays a vital role in identifying any potential red flags or discrepancies that could pose a potential risk to the business. Knowing that this thoroughness and attention to detail help prevent potential issues such as fraud or misconduct is extremely rewarding. Providing accurate and reliable information to the wider business also allows them to make informed decisions that contributes to the success and reputation of the company. There is a sense of responsibility and trust that ensures we are being compliant and mitigating risk.

I joined First Derivative 12 years ago as part of the graduate OPTIONS programme. I’m a Programme manager in First Derivative’s Client Solutions practice and a lot of people assume my role is made up of project plans and tons of admin work. Whilst I do love a good plan, the role brings so much more in a practical sense when you are on the ground working with a client. Every project can vary but it’s important to have really strong stakeholder engagement skills, be a keen problem solver, a team player as well as loving a good bit of organisation.
You are a combination of the people around you, so surround yourself with people who share the same values as yourself. For me this is positivity, ambition and a willingness to learn and help others.

I have to say the people. I genuinely love working with everyone at FD. From the top down, across all departments and practices, I feel I can reach out and network with everyone. I enjoy working and learning from my team on my project, I love networking and aiding my fellow employees to improve and add to my practice and working with all the amazing operational teams and committee through being the Chairperson of Pride. No day is the same, and working and learning from our excellent employee base makes it even better.
As a Managing Consultant within our FinCrime practice, I have had multiple interesting projects mainly across Anti-Money Laundering and Know Your Customer space. We have a number of different projects that help clients so you are constantly challenged within your role. Within my current role on a large scale remediation project, I act as a Subject Matter Expert, aiding staff at all levels with queries, acting as a quality control on work and acting as a deputy when the lead is out of office. Outside of the project, I aid on different internal practice projects while acting as a People Team Lead to a number employees on multiple levels. I act as a first point of contact for any questions or issues while helping mentor employees with their career aspirations.
As pride chairperson, I help manage the committee on a global level, I do this by presiding at board meetings and creating meeting agendas, setting the goals and objectives of the committee, helping all regional leads manage their events and serve as the primary contact both internally and externally for the committee. We are lucky to have a strong committee an a larger pride network that help as a collective to educate the organization through many ways to ensure each person comes to work their most authentic self.
The pride network has been something I have always been involved in. It is vital that everyone, whether you are part of the LGBTQ+ community or not, feels comfortable coming to work. It is easy to forget, that while there has been strides made in the community worldwide, people daily within the community still struggle. There is still so much work to do. While this is the case, I will always be part of a network to aid this. By promoting inclusive leadership, encouraging allyship, creating a sense of belonging, and investing in employee development, organisations can foster a sense of pride among their employees. This is why at FD, pride is Employee Led, the firm gives us the power to educate, support and empower employees throughout their career here.

I enjoy working and learning from my team on my project, I love networking and aiding my fellow employees to improve and add to my practice and working with all the amazing operational teams and committee through being the Chairperson of Pride. No day is the same, and working and learning from our excellent employee base makes it even better.
As a Managing Consultant within our FinCrime practice, I have had multiple interesting projects mainly across Anti-Money Laundering and Know Your Customer space. We have a number of different projects that help clients so you are constantly challenged within your role. Within my current role on a large scale remediation project, I act as a Subject Matter Expert, aiding staff at all levels with queries, acting as a quality control on work and acting as a deputy when the lead is out of office. Outside of the project, I aid on different internal practice projects while acting as a People Team Lead to a number employees on multiple levels. I act as a first point of contact for any questions or issues while helping mentor employees with their career aspirations.
As pride chairperson, I help manage the committee on a global level, I do this by presiding at board meetings and creating meeting agendas, setting the goals and objectives of the committee, helping all regional leads manage their events and serve as the primary contact both internally and externally for the committee. We are lucky to have a strong committee an a larger pride network that help as a collective to educate the organization through many ways to ensure each person comes to work their most authentic self.
The pride network has been something I have always been involved in. It is vital that everyone, whether you are part of the LGBTQ+ community or not, feels comfortable coming to work. It is easy to forget, that while there has been strides made in the community worldwide, people daily within the community still struggle. There is still so much work to do. While this is the case, I will always be part of a network to aid this. By promoting inclusive leadership, encouraging allyship, creating a sense of belonging, and investing in employee development, organisations can foster a sense of pride among their employees.
